35 killed in cracker explosion

At least 35 persons were killed and many others badly burnt when a huge stock of Diwali crackers blew up in a rice mill being used as a firework godown at a busy market area in Pallipattu, Tiruvallur district,  about 45kn north of Chennai and near the Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh.

When the explosion occurred the street was busy with Diwali last minute shoppers. The firework shop near the godown too had a good number of customers during that particular time. The explosion was in such a form that the sound was heard for miles and fire and smoke engulfed the whole atmosphere for hours. The impact of the fire was such that the transformer near the godown to exploded causing power cut to many surrounding villages. The power cut and heavy smoke made the rescue operation and body count much difficult. The balls of flames accompanied by much load blasts swathed screaming customers caught in a narrow passage to the crackers shop, an eyewitness said in shock.

However, eyewitnesses estimated there were at least 35 charred bodies inside the godown and the adjacent cracker shop that was crowded with last minute shoppers. Fire service personnel at the spot said “its difficult to tell you now how many people have been killed” but the eyewitness said “more than 35 people are dead. I could not bear the stench, so I steeped out immediately from the scene.” The district collector and superintendent of police are camping in that area and monitoring the rescue operation round the clock. The fire force department is handling the situation with their trained staff. Fire service staff has pressed water tankers from the nearby fire stations too. They had a great battle to extinguish the hour long fire. They somehow tackled the fire from spreading avoiding huge commercial loss in the market area. A medical team has arrived to conduct on the spot medical assessment of the injured or burn patients.

A local official said the dead included the godown owner and a couple of his assistants. Preliminary reports said that the crackers shop caught fire when a worker switched on the light inside a cramped room to fetch stocks to feed the adjacent retail outlet. Electric short-circuit is suspected.

It is leaned that most of the dead were from chittor who landed in the town to buy crackers for Diwali on the Friday evening. The families across the border are in shock waiting for their family members who went to tamil nadu for the Diwali purchases. The charred bodies are in the status of beyond recognition; this makes the situation much critical too.

These types of incidents surfaces during the festival season even after government initiative to have a safer Diwali.
