Flood victims  blocks C.M.’s convey

Flood victims angry over late relief operations, a large number of flood victims in two towns on Sunday stopped the convoy of Chief Minister K Rosaiah. Many people in the flood-devastated Alampur town in Mahbubnagar district blocked the chief minister’s convoy as he started his first ground trip since the natural calamity hit parts of the state from Oct 2.

Standing sun baked on an open vehicle along with few state ministers, the chief minister was going around the Alampur town when a large group of victims blocked the convoy, pleading him to get down from the vehicle and see their damaged houses in the interior areas from the main road. They also raised slogans of “CM down down”, the flood victims had a much heated argument with the chief minister’s security personnel and the policemen, who had a hard time managing and controlling the flood victims.

There was a general complaint that state government was not at the disposal of the flood victims at any stage of their sufferings. The chief minister just made aerial survey and for the first time after days of flood, he is making a ground visit but not meeting the victims, this largely angered the flood victims. When the blockage dramas were at the heels, in an attempt to gently pacify the flood victims, the Chief Minister addressed them, promising to do provide all possible benefits.

The chief minister also promised to rebuild the fully or partially damaged houses and provided new home for those who lost their houses in the recent floods. The chief minister had to face a similar situation in Kurnool district that largely suffered due to recent floods. The flood victims tried to explain him their tale of woes and suffering after flood too. Rosaiah said his state government did its best in the wake of unprecedented heavy rains which poured into the state and floods to keep the loss to lives at the minimum.

After a night stay at Kurnool, the chief minister is planning to visit Nandyal town that too was widely inundated. He will then make a trip to Guntur and Krishna, two of the worst-hit districts among the five districts.

The recent floods claimed 65 human lives in five districts, inundating many towns and approximately 500 villages, affecting over an estimate 1.5 million population, rendering half a million people totally homeless and partially or fully damaging houses, public infrastructure such as National Highways, road, bridges, telecommunication line and electricity lines and crops. Andhra Pradesh suffered serious damages to the tune of nearly Rs.12, 666 crore, it is just an initial estimate of the state government.
