Kidneys – A vital part in our body
The kidneys are paired organs, that have the production of urine as their main function. Kidneys are seen in several types of animals, particularly including vertebrates and some invertebrates. They are one of the important part of the urinary system, but have many secondary functions related with homeostatic functions. These generally include the regulation of acid-base balance, electrolytes and blood pressure.
In the process of producing urine, the kidneys largely excrete wastes such as urea and ammonium from the body; the kidneys are responsible for the reabsorption of amino acids and glucose in the body. The kidneys are most important in the production of hormones including renin, vitamin D, and erythropoietin.
