Kidneys Problems and Diagnosis
Kidneys … Problems & Diagnosis
Points to remember regarding a safer kidney
- The kidneys are two vital organs that keep the blood clean and chemically balanced.
- Kidney disease can be easily detected by a spot check for protein or albumin in the urine and a calculation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) based on a blood test.
- An important thing related to kidney is the progression of kidney disease can be slowed by different methods of treatments, but it cannot always be reversed.
- End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the total or nearly total and permanent loss of kidney function in the body.
- Dialysis and transplantation can only extend the lives of people with kidney failure.
- Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two main causes of kidney failure.
- People with reduced kidney function should see their doctor periodically. Doctors who are specialized in kidney disease are known as nephrologists.
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) largely increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
- People in the initial early stages of CKD may be able to largely save their remaining kidney function for many years by
- Controlling their blood glucose level
- Controlling their blood pressure level
- Following a regular low-protein diet
- Always maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol in the blood
- By taking an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)
- By quitting the habit of smoking
Kidney failure
As understanding of the major causes of kidney failure increases, so does the ability to predict, prevent and treat these diseases. Recent studies have shown that intensive control of diabetes and high blood pressure can largely prevent or delay the onset of kidney disease.
In the area of genetics, researchers supported by the Kidney research center have located two genes which generally cause the most common form of PKD and learned that a individual must have two defective copies of the PKD1 gene to develop PKD. Doctors and Researchers have also found a gene in the roundworm that is most identical to the PKD1 gene. This latest new knowledge can be used in the search for effective therapies to prevent and treat PKD.
