Neil himself has sung a track in almost all his films till date, writes Mandeep Puri
Born on 15th January, Neil Nitin Mukesh is a Bollywood actor who can also sing well, being a genetically good singer. He is the son of singer Nitin Mukesh and the grandson of the noted and great Indian Playback singer Late. Mukesh Chand Mathur, well known by his name Mukesh. Neil himself has sung a track in almost all his films till date. His latest film is Madhur Bhandarkar’s JAIL.
Neil graduated from HR College, with a Bachelors’ degree in Communications. He has been very focused on his career since he was in the 12th standard. His name was given by Lata mangeshkar and was based on Neil Armstrong. He did a 4-month workshop with Kishore Namit Kapoor and also at Anupam Kher’s institute during his vacations. He also assisted Aditya Chopra in his movie Mujhse Dosti Karoge, when he was in college. Neil did receive offers as a lead actor earlier, but as he did not want to debut with a love story, he chose to wait. Then Sriram Raghavan offered him Johnny Gaddaar, whose script he was very impressed with, as it demanded an ensemble cast.

Neil has always wanted to be an actor. It has been his childhood dream. He has also worked in Yash Raj Films’ movie Vijay and Vimal Kumar’s Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni as a child artiste when he was around 7 years old. He played the role of Govinda (actor) as a child in Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni in 1989.
Neil made his movie debut as a lead actor with the 2007 crime thriller Johnny Gaddaar directed by Sriram Raghavan. He received good reviews for his role of Vikram, the main antagonist. His acting was very much appreciated. A reviewer noted that he has made a good move by not being afraid of taking on a negative role. Then came his film Aa Dkhen Zaraa, which did not fare that well at the Box Office but again his acting was very well praised. However New York changed the path of Neil’s career and after the film became a super hit and his acting became talk of the town, People started to look up to Neil as a promising actor. His upcoming film after Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail, are Sudhir Mishra’s Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, Thank You and The Italian Job.

Neil won the Fresh Face of the year award at the IIFA Awards 2008. He was also Nominated as the most promising Newcomer at many Awards such as Filmfare, Stardust, Star Screen Awards etc. He is also a winner of the Best Performance in a Negative Role, which he won at the Apsara Film & Television Producers Guild Awards in 2008.
In Jail, Neil Nitin Mukesh plays the Protagonist Parag Dixit, who was the King of his own World…A great job, a lovely house, a lovelier girlfriend Maansi (Mughda Godse)… a night out with friends at some suburban watering hole after a hard day’s job… life just couldn’t get better for him. And all of a sudden he finds himself inside the four walls of a prison thanks to a series of unfortunate events around him. The whole film is from his point of view and tells the stories of several other inmates of the prison. Some of these are under trials, convicts and also the cops who are in charge of maintaining the order in the prison. Jail gives a ringside view of the world that exists inside the walls of the prison spread across our country.
