Newly Married couples – Stress & Pressure factors
For a lot of couples these stress factors — the culture wars, expectations out of each other, family or in- laws’, work and financial pressures are a little too much to handle. They are calling it quits even before figuring out how to resolve issues. Dr Samir Parikh, clinical psychiatrist, Max Hospital, says, “ There is no lack of willingness on a couple’s part to resolve marital issues. But with increasing work pressure on both the partners, their energies are all spent in solving professional problems rather than personal ones. It eventually leads to deep resentments, which after some time erupts like a volcano, engulfing the marriage as a whole.” Sudipa Mukherjee, corporate sales manager with a private airline, says, “ During the courtship period we usually look forward to meeting our partners. But marriage brings in a sort of finality.
Sure, I am happy that I have someone to fall back on and share things when I reach home. But where’s the time to actually talk? I hardly have the time to call Sougata ( her banker husband who has an equally killing schedule) even if something important needs to be conveyed. Then comes the pressure of bills, payments, rents — everything that comes with running a household with just two people around.” You may think these problems belong to people who do not go into a marriage with their eyes open, but relationship counsellor Anu Goel gives you a case worth pondering over. “ There was this couple who came to me within six months of getting married. The interesting thing about this case was that the girl was first known to the mother of the guy since they were neighbours. She was the ‘ nice girl next door’. For the guy, it was a logical decision to get married to a girl he became best friend of.” It was a double whammy worth celebrating, except that it did not last long.
“ Within the first month of the marriage there were huge fights between the girl and the mother- in- law. Every equation changed and the smallest of problems blew out of proportion once she started living in their house,” cites Goel.
That women, at least in urban India, are more confident of their socio- economic standing and their future these days has a lot to do with the quick decision to call it quits and start afresh on their part. But what emerges from most case studies is that when it comes to putting an end to a relationship, both men and women aren’t looking at marriage as a commitment for life — it works till it does or it ends — hopefully keeping each partner in good spirits, and with a hope to start afresh, either alone or with someone else.
