The day’s programme began with the famous ‘Lavani Nritya’ of Maharashtra where a group of dancers performed Gourang depicting the beauty of the Radha Krishna Leela. The tempo of Lavani was matched by the unified and rhythmic movements of the dancers.

Next to perform were the fakirs from the Sind region of Pakistan. The enchanting music they created from the tambooras was soul-stirring. The performance of Mustafa and party was based on two ragas Sur Husaini and Sur Ram Kali.

The vigour of the folk music of Afghanistan stole the thunder. The jam packed hall swayed to the music of Makhtoon and party. Their music cut across the barrier of the language and touché many a heart. The entire theatre reverberated with sound of claps and wolf whistles. They ended their presentation with the instrumental presentation of the famous Indian melody ‘Lekar pehla pehla pyaar’.

Tejan Bai’s famous disciple Meena Sahu next came on the stage to perform Chattisgarh’s famous Pandavani. The seven member troupe on table, harmonium and other instruments along with Sahu who enacted out the scene of Draupdi Cheerharan from the epic Mahabharta, did a fantastic job of bringing the epic alive.

Vijaya Manandhar’s group from Nepal brought the peacock dance for the audiences of Chandigarh. The peacock is the spiritual bird of Nepal and is associated with royalty. The dance imitates the behaviour of the peacock during a rainstorm.

The evening concluded with the presentation from Kashmir known as Hafiz Nagma. Hafiz Nagma, is a famous classical dance form, and is performed on the basis of the Sofiyiana Kalam, the classical music of the state.
