Swine flu: Mask yourself

Swine influenza is a serious infection through any one of the several types of swine influenza virus. It is also referred in the medical field as swine flu, pig flu, hog flu and swine.
Swine influenza virus (SIV) is endemic in pigs and is any strain of the influenza family of viruses. In the year, 2009, the known SIV strains contained influenza C and the subtypes of influenza A generally known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3.
Swine influenza virus is usually found in the pig populations worldwide. The general transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is rare and does not lead to human influenza which often results in the production of antibodies in the blood.

When transmission causes human influenza, then it is called Zoonotic swine flu. People who work in piggery are at great risk of swine flu infection. There is no risk of infection when the meat of an infected animal is properly cooked.
In the mid-20th century, the identification of influenza and subtypes became clearly possible, that allowed accurate diagnosis of transmission to human being. Till date only 50 such cases of transmissions world over have been confirmed. But the irony is these strains of swine flu very rarely transmit from human to human.
Symptoms of swine flu
The serious symptoms that would clearly indicate with swine flu which would need urgent medical attention are:
• Fast breathing or difficulty in breathing
• The skin color turns Bluish or gray.
• Not drinking enough fluids or not feeling thirsty.
• Severe or persistent vomiting plus stomach pain.
• Not waking up from sleep or not interacting after a silence.
• Being so irritable, getting angry soon on small matters.

• Flu-like symptoms improve but within a short spell then return with worse cough and fever.
Precaution that you need to know:
• Take Anti-flu medications, including Relenza and Tamiflu, are available in all medical outlets to prevent and treat swine flu .. but it is better to take after doctor’s prescription.
• If someone with swine coughs and sneezes close to you so be away from the swine flu patient.
• Droplets from a swine flu patient’s cough or sneeze can also contaminate surfaces or air.
• People with swine flu are more likely to be contagious for 1 or 2 day before and nearly 7 or 8 days after they feel to get sick with swine flu symptoms.
