Trouble  on  aboard  – Air India

The Air India pilot and co-pilot who were largely accused of molesting an air hostess in an incident that led to a mid-air scuffle and create an inconvenience among the passengers, were arrested and later released on bail on Tuesday.

The operations cell of Delhi Police carried out the brisk arrests. Mr. Rajan Bhagat, PRO, Delhi police said that ‘‘the two pilots joined the investigations on Tuesday. We interrogated the pilots and arrested them. But the charges against them were bailable so they were let off after they obtained bail from the concerned investigating officer.’’

Police said Air India pilot named Ranbir Arora and co-pilot named Aditya Chopra were called for an hour closed room questioning in connection with the mid-air scuffle on the IC 884 flight from Sharjah to Delhi, which also involved the air hostess and a flight purser, named Amit Khanna. Police, however, added that the probe had not come to a close and still matters have to be dealt in different angles. ‘‘We are still investigating,’’ Bhagat said.

The victim, Air hostess of Air India named Komal Singh had approached the police on October 3, claiming she was ‘‘assaulted and molested’’ by her that day fight pilots named Arora and Chopra inside the cockpit during the journey to Delhi on the same day.

The arrests came ten days after they were booked under IPC sections relating to voluntarily causing hurt (section 323), making gestures to insult the modesty of woman (509) and common intention (34), assault or use of criminal force on a woman to outrage her modesty (354).

Earlier, when the air hostess and her flight purser friend went ahead to the cops to register a case of molestation, the two pilots were learned to be toying with the idea of registering the complaint of forcible entry into the cockpit against flight purser Khanna to their concern authorities and the cop.

According to sources in Air India, the crew members involved in the argument understood their ‘‘mistake’’ once the full meaning of the incident dawned on them. They also reportedly understood that the incident could leave a question mark on their future career.

‘‘However, this counter serious complaint and allegation would have initiated a very serious charge of hijacking and would have invited the severest of punishments under the prevailing laws. Realizing this, the two pilots were requested not to go ahead with their charges. Instead they were asked to cooperate with the police in the case as the charges were comparatively mild,’’ said a source.
